Shark's Ink

We are pleased to announce the publication of a series of new color monotypes by Barbara Takenaga.

The artist describes these works as follows: Since the 1980s, I have been interested in the possibilities of printmaking to explore serial variations. Each of these prints share the same key imagery but also are uniquely different through the use of marbled rice papers, hand coloring, collage, installation or other alterations.  This series of monoprints is a continuation of recent work using details from Japanese woodblock prints.

“Untitled I” is a color monoprint with hand coloring, 18 x 15″. “Untitled IV” is a color monoprint with hand coloring and collage, 18 x 15″. Each print is unique and costs $2,500 plus packing and shipping.

“Variation (afterimage) continues my long-standing interest in repetition, variation, and the migration of forms across different bodies of work. Derived from the same vocabulary that produced my earlier prints with Shark’s Ink., the image has been reduced to a residual structure that appears simultaneously present and dissolving. The title refers to the persistence of visual information after the original stimulus has vanished, placing the work between perception and memory.”

The artist describes this work as follows:

“This is a map of an imperfect but perfectible imaginary country. It is an invitation to create a place where everyone can enjoy a shared life of freedom. It is a wish for anyone with big dreams that keep moving away every time they get close to them. It is also kind of a poem describing a place that may be temporarily out of reach under our current chaotic circumstances. I hope someday, when the pendulum of history swings the other way, we will finally land on our lost dream.”

The artist describes this work as follows:

“Anemones were Matisse’s favorite flowers to paint. Their curvaceous forms, jewel-like colors. Drawing anemones always makes me feel closer to him. Here I drew directly from the flower using toner powder and a stick, touche crayon and toner wash. After the flowers were printed on a gorgeous dove gray paper, I filled in the petals with thinned oil paint. Early spring. Tender but resilient blossoms.”

The artist describes this work as follows:

“My work addresses climate change, biodiversity loss, and their significant impact on humanity.

Over the last four years, I have created four lithographs at Shark’s Ink. each featuring an endangered Colorado animal. I have learned much throughout the process of selecting them. The most recent is Ferret in the Headlights (black-footed ferret), which depicts the Mustela nigripes, the black-footed ferret—arguably the most endangered mammal in the U.S.—that conservationists are attempting to save through cloning.

These works celebrate the joy and exuberance of life, emphasizing the incredible variety of existence on our planet—the only one confirmed to harbor life.”

The artist describes this work as follows:

“This print grows out of ink and collage works using old book pages. The title or chapter heading is a kind of found text, unmoored from its context or discernible meaning, inviting some free association for the viewers. The visual interventions in these pieces varies, trying to skirt the line of illustration and disjunction with the text. Here, the word ‘Further’ gets imagined as a projection in time and location.”

The artist describes this work as follows:

“This print presents a fictitious encounter between contemporary colonial forces and Native Americans who are defenders of immigrant refugees and displaced populations.

A collage of a six-year-old Mayan girl with an Aztec headdress and the body of Capitan America from a 1993 Marvel Comics book represents the early American Nations. In my version she encounters a white supremacist character at the Grand Canyon in a comic book style.”

The artist describes this work as follows:

“In Rondo I hope to evoke spring and summer in Italy. A simple glass of wild poppies, gathered in a morning walk. A fresh lemon yellow lemon and its very green leaves from a tree on the terrace. A simply painted sugar bowl. A beautiful polychrome platter and a ripply striped curtain with their own rich coloration. Each element has a series of wiggly curves that echo off of each other. The title Rondo refers to a musical form with a principal theme (in this case all of those repeated curving lines) which alternates with one or more contrasting themes (various color combinations on a light drenched tabletop).”
