“Unofficial Portraits: The Martyr”

Using anonymous historical photographs as the subject matter of her prints, Liu reconstructs the unknown stories of three women: “The Bride,” “The Maiden” and “The Martyr”. She embellishes the surfaces with lovely drawings of insects, butterflies and birds, painterly drips and collaged Chinese paper cut-outs that create a veil of time and meaning over her subjects. “…between dissolving and preserving is the rich middle-ground where the meaning of an image is found… My prints are metaphors for memory and history…” The editions of 30, plus proofs, have been printed on white Rives BFK 30 x 30”.
