“Prince Buster”

Hardy states: “This is a remake of a small colored pencil drawing done in 1993. Here it has an added weenie spearing crown. A takeoff on ‘Lil’ Hot Stuff’, a cartoon devil that was one of the most popular tattoo designs in the 50’s and 60’s. I put scores of them on servicemen between 1968 and 1973. This devil is not so cute and in hot pursuit. The form he is chasing came to me totally unpremeditated at the time of drawing. It reminds me of the weird inexplicable forms in hot rod ‘crazy’ painting of the 1950’s that had a big impact on my youthful consciousness. The title is borrowed from the name of a great Jamaican ska musician of the 1960’s with a nod to the smutty adolescent joke name Buster Hymen current in the mid 1950’s. It wraps up this suite with me as a ‘prints’ buster”.
