“Portuguese Palace Couple”

In this woodcut Betty Woodman places a pair of her ceramic vessels in front of a tiled Portuguese frieze. Inspired by a trip to Portugal, Woodman has cut woodblocks to form the tile patterning of the frieze. She has combined chine collé papers and textures of the wood grain to depict the rich glazing of her ceramic sculpture. Pochoir printed in transparent grey creates an illusion of the vessels raised above the surface of the print. “Portuguese Palace Couple” has been printed in 11 colors from 8 woodblocks and one pochoir in an edition of 30, plus proofs, on Okawara paper, 27½ x 45½”.
