Black white and gray convey gravity and emotion unambiguously whatever the subject matter. From Goya to Beckman to Picasso we can relive historical events through these artist’s temperaments. Born in the colonial limbo of Puerto Rico eighty years ago is my reality, a story too daunting to attempt. Bud Shark generously encouraged me to draw it, and to push the greasy black crayon to a darkness where I could find General Nelson Miles, Chief Sitting Bull and Geronimo. A triumphant General Miles in Guanica, Puerto Rico, the climax of his career with the Spanish American War and Manifest Destiny . Goya is there because he saw that reason produced monsters, folly, madness, and all the coming attractions which lie ahead. But there is humor in Spanish and it’s subversive nature remains untouchable.
