Tom Burckhardt

Born 1964, New York City
Lives in New York City

Tom Burckhardt made his first prints at Shark’s during February 2001 at our Holualoa, Hawaii studio. In these prints, as in his paintings, Burckhardt combines figurative and abstract elements. “My aim is to make the more descriptive
elements feel abstract and to push the abstract elements into the real world of
space and gravity”

Burckhardt is interested in art from cultures where symbols and narrative forms are mysterious and indecipherable. Seeing artifacts independent of background knowledge, he uses the images abstractly and constructs a unique visual language. His influences include extensive travels, Mayan ceramics, Asian art, the New York school and funhouse painting.

Burckhardt recently made a new color lithograph entitled Incognito and a group of monoprints.

Tom Burckhardt has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions. He has received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation award, a New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Grant and a Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Grant. Burckhardt’s work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY.
